Yeast Allergies

Fermex are asked from time to time questions with regards to the connection between our baker’s yeast and yeast allergies and infections.

Fermex BLY have never carried out or commissioned allergy testing in Australia and therefore rely on the research results of others when answering allergy queries. The clinical test results from which the following information was drawn are from the United Kingdom and the United States and therefore contain no local statistics.

In 1982, Dr Patricia Lucas et al of Germantown Tennessee published her opinion, educed from research, that yeast allergies are caused by the widespread use of immunosuppressive antibiotics and other drugs (including birth control pills) which lead to the breakdown of the body’s natural immune system allowing the Candida Albicans to erode the protective mucous wall in the intestine and other places within the body, and the production of antibodies. This theory has been separately substantiated by Dr Theron Randolf and Dr C Orian Truss, both of the United States.

As we are all individuals the treatment of Candidiasis in each case will differ but the three main adjuncts appear to be the control of diet and the avoidance of nutrients which sustain live yeast (i.e. substances such as simple or highly processed carbohydrates which feed the living yeast cells), limiting intake of drugs, and encourage the replenishment of bacteria in the intestine suppressing the Candida population.
